Re “Crisis in Virginia Grows, Tangling 3rd Top Official” (front page, Feb. 7):
As a society we have to ask ourselves: Do we really want to judge all of our politicians by what they did in school? We know that the human brain is not fully developed till about 25 years old. We know that many of us made mistakes in our youth. We passed criminal justice reform to give people a second chance. Should we not do the same for those who have now matured and are running for or hold public office?
Do we really want to put people under the microscope for youthful transgressions as we are doing now for two Virginia public officials, Attorney General Mark Herring and Gov. Ralph Northam, and have done for Justice Brett Kavanaugh and Senator Elizabeth Warren?
I am not saying what they did years ago was right, if they are guilty. What I am saying is that we cannot all live in our glass houses. Maybe it is time to take a step back and not look so far back into people’s pasts, but look instead at how they are acting today as adults.

The argument made by supporters of Gov. Ralph Northam about the blackface/K.K.K. picture in his yearbook that “it was from another time” makes me furious. The 1980s? C’mon. The civil rights movement began in the 1950s and by the time of the huge movement with Martin Luther King Jr., most people got the message.
In the ’80s you still thought it was O.K.? Give me a break. It wasn’t even O.K. in the ’60s. Or, hmmm, any time.

Re “A Medical School’s Yearbook Holds Fond, and Abhorrent, Memories” (news article, Feb. 6):
As one of the editors of our student-produced medical school yearbook in the 1980s, I recently pulled the book from the shelf, dusted it off and scrutinized every page. What do you know? Even with the use of a finely tuned 2019 “retrospect-a-scope,” not a single offensive picture or insensitive quote was revealed.
Compassion and respect are timeless.

To the Editor:
It’s time to expose those of us, including a lot of elected officials, who attended summer camp in the 1950s and 1960s and whooped around a campfire dressed up as Indians, complete with feathers and war paint. Although we were exalting their bravery and wisdom, and not making fun of them, we never gave much thought to the feelings of real Native Americans (who at some camps were members of the staff).
